Evenly cut residential turf illustrating summer mowing height

Summer mowing height affects more than the appearance of your Mankato lawn. Cutting very short to delay the next visit can leave the grass with less leaf area during demanding weather. A better starting point is the grass type, its current height and how actively it is growing.

Before changing the mower setting, measure several representative spots. Use the actual grass height as your reference. Numbers on a mower’s adjustment lever do not always describe the finished height in inches.

Choose summer mowing height for the grass you have

Iowa State University Extension recommends a summer height of 3 to 3.5 inches for Kentucky bluegrass. The extra leaf area helps shade the grass crowns. That guidance provides a useful reference for a common cool-season lawn, but identify your own grass before applying it.

Mixed lawns can complicate the choice. If you do not know which grasses dominate, ask your provider what they see. A shared understanding of the lawn makes it easier to agree on the finished result.

Use the one-third rule with summer mowing height

The same Extension guidance advises removing no more than one-third of the leaf length in one cut. For example, a lawn maintained at 3 inches reaches that limit at about 4.5 inches. Waiting substantially longer creates a different job than a routine trim.

If rain or travel interrupts the schedule, explain the delay before the next visit. Ask how the crew will bring the lawn back to the target height without treating all the extra growth as a normal cut.

Notice uneven ground and exposed edges

Walk the lawn after mowing and look at slopes, raised edges and shallow dips. Take a photo if one area looks noticeably shorter than the rest. The location may matter as much as the overall setting.

Also distinguish a height concern from a cleanup concern. Loose material on a sidewalk does not necessarily mean the grass needs a lower cut. Describe each issue separately so your provider can respond accurately.

Agree on a consistent finish

Review the target height and expectations when arranging professional mowing service. Then use a few measured spots to compare results instead of relying only on how the lawn looks from the street.
