Mulch depth is easy to overlook when a Mankato landscape bed needs a fall refresh. Faded color does not tell you how much material remains underneath. Before adding another layer, move a little mulch aside in several spots and check what is already there.
A better plan begins with the bed’s condition, plants and intended finish. Then you can discuss whether the project needs a light refresh, removal of excess material or a different approach in selected areas.
Check mulch depth around plants first
The University of Maryland Extension mulching guide recommends a shallow layer of one to three inches around trees and shrubs, with mulch away from their trunks. It warns that excess material can harm plants. Treat that range as guidance for those plantings, then discuss your particular bed with the provider.
Check low spots and edges as well as the middle. Material can collect unevenly, so one measurement may not represent the whole area. Note places where mulch touches trunks or covers the base of a plant.
Estimate mulch depth and material volume
Measure the bed’s area before asking for a material estimate. For a simple rectangle, multiply length by width to get square feet. A sketch with a few measurements is often more useful than guessing from a photo alone.
To estimate cubic yards, multiply square feet by the added depth in inches, then divide by 324. For example, 324 square feet with one additional inch requires about one cubic yard. This is a volume calculation, not a recommendation to add that amount to every bed.
Remember to account for existing material. If a bed already has enough mulch, another full layer may not be the right choice. Ask the provider to confirm the amount after reviewing the site.
Prepare the bed and delivery route
Identify weeds, debris and edging repairs before discussing installation. Also decide where material can sit during the job and how the crew will reach the beds. Narrow gates, stairs and planted areas can affect the work.
- Mark the beds included in the estimate.
- Identify plants and small fixtures to protect.
- Confirm the mulch type and preferred appearance.
- Discuss old material and any removal work.
- Agree on cleanup of paths and nearby pavement.
Arrange a Mankato landscape refresh
Jason’s Lawn Care offers rock and mulch installation in Greater Mankato. Share the bed locations, measurements and photos when you request a free estimate. If leaves and yard debris also need attention, discuss fall cleanup as a separate part of the plan.
